Here is Laura in her first ever ice skating show. She loved it!!! Seeing such a smile that totally reaches her eyes was so much fun. I think she's found her thing. This is gonna be expensive!

Well, winter is here and the children are enjoying all the benefits of snow, including but not limited to: snow days from school, hot chocolate, the thrill of sledding down a hill, and let's not forget that the coveted ski resort is now open. Spencer has already strapped a narrow board to his feet and discovered the effects of gravity on an inclined slope. Soon this will be a regular occurance. Oh, the joys of winter!

We went for a short vacation in Hocking Hills a few days ago. One of our activities was horse back riding, and Benton wanted this hat as a souvenir. He wasn't so enthusiastic about having his picture taken though.

Meet the newest household member

Meet Archimedes! He's the newest (and hairest) member of the Drake household. He's three months old and we brought him home from the vet's office yesterday. He's part lab and we don't know what else, in other words, a good old American canardly. (You "can hardly" tell what he is). So far his gentle personality, quiet demeanor, and love of the outdoors show promising signs of a great family pet. The kid's are quite taken with him, and we start obedience classes on Monday. We call him "Archie" for short.

The boys began taking fencing lessons down in Columbus a couple of weeks ago. Aside from the drive, I am really enjoying it and stand on the side and learn as much as I can. Benton was disappointed the first class because he wasn't handed a "sword" and allowed to go slashing about. This last lesson they were given a foil and mask and were able to practice on the wall. The instructor is very disciplined, safe, and intent on teaching correct technique, which I find reassuring. We'll see how long this stint lasts, although the only reason why I would want it to end would be due to the drive. Benton really enjoyed this last lesson!

Wishing all of you joy and blessings at this time of year. We finished school today, and I think that I've been looking forward to the break as much as the kid's have. Thanks to all who have expressed concern after my accident. I'm well, although I have a lot of headaches now. We should have a new (for us) vehicle in a few more days.

Here are the kids all dressed up. Spencer was supposed to be a toilet papered tree, but decided to forego the toilet paper last minute. So, he's just a tree in this photo. Benton is, obviously, Harry Potter. And Laura is a Spider Queen.

I know, I know. You all had given up on me ever posting again. I'm imagining all of your surprised faces when you realize that your eyes aren't playing tricks on you and yes, that actually is an update on Katie's blog. Well, fall has happened here in Ohio. Most of the leaves are scattered on the ground, the days are much shorter, and sweaters are becoming the norm to grab out of the drawer. We had a beautiful Indian Summer day today and were able to do some clean up in the yard. I felt great! Let's see.... you're reading this because you want some news....... thinking..... thinking..... thinking...... well, most of you know that I'm homeschooling Spencer this year. All is going well. Benton is enjoying second grade at his new school. They are both doing great and I'm (so far) really enjoying all the craziness that goes with the territory. Soccer ends tomorrow (joy and excitement!). Laura started her first dance class at the beginning of September. When her first class ended, she started crying when I showed up to take her home. Her teacher was very concerned and started to tell me how she really did have a good time. I had to explain to the teacher that she wasn't crying because I left her there, she was crying because I came to take her back home. She's having a wonderful time!

Spring Update

Well, here we are towards the end of May already. Where does the time go? My family has been bugging me for some updates, so I thought I'd take a few minutes to update this blog. Spencer was very pleased when he took second place in the District Pinewood Derby in April and has already begun with his plans for next year's car. The soccer season is (finally) over and here are a few pictures to prove they played. Benton is on the swim team and Spencer is on the dive team this summer. Both are anxiously awaiting for the season to start. Oh, and both can't wait for school to be over; and, frankly, neither can I.
